Hilary Hahn: A Portrait

I am a great admirer of Hilary Hahn, and my admiration goes back to the time when she was a “YAV” (Young American Violinist).

This DVD is unique because it combines actual recorded performances of the Korngold Violin Concerto, and also the Mozart Piano and violin sonata K. 301. In addition, this DVD is also an interesting documentary of the violinist traveling around the world. This DVD includes personal footage of Hahn backstage at the so-called Philharmonie Hall in Berlin, as well as on a tour at the Curtis Institute, a recording session at Abbey Road Studios, and on a trip to Hong Kong.

Included on this DVD are excerpts from The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams, the Chaconne from the Partita in D minor by Bach, and the Paganini Concerto No. 1.

Ms. Hahn is a terrific musician, and her performances always feature gorgeous tone, technical precision, and brilliant interpretations. The first and 3rd movements of the Korngold concerto sound somewhat like the film music for which Korngold was famous. As a contrast, the second movement is quite different, very melodic, interesting, and beautiful; and it places Korngold solidly in the classical music repertoire.
