Sonatas!

Brahms Violin Sonatas!

Over the past two days, I have carefully listened again to my recording of the three Brahms sonatas for violin and piano, as performed by Yitzhak Perlman, violin, and Vladimir Ashkenazy, piano. Occasionally I try to select a favorite one from the three sonatas, and based on my age, time of year, mood, health, and other factors, the favorite changes. Right now, the Sonata#3 makes it to my favorite spot!

These 3 sonatas are – for me – masterpieces because they sing! That sounds simple enough, yet it is that aspect that is special for me. The two instruments, work together, sing together, dialog together, reach climaxes together, and become somber together in a wonderful, seamless exchange.

Perlman plays these sonatas beautifully, with his warm, technically flawless tone; and the supportive, lyrical playing from Vladimir Ashkenazy is wonderful, as well.

Here is a recording of the 4th movement (Presto Agitato) from the Sonata #3 of Johannes Brahms.

Enjoy it to the fullest!
