Martha Argerich!!!

Shostakovich concerto for piano, trumpet, and strings, OP.35

Martha Argerich hasn’t been doing many solo recitals in the US. It seems like she does appear in some European festivals, but for me, a live performance with her is always electrifying! As such, I miss you, Martha!!

The Shostakovich Piano Concerto #1 finds Ms. Argerich offering a passionate, stunning performance of this challenging Russian masterpiece, with the accompaniment by the Orchestra Della Svizzera Italiana, under the baton of Alexander Vedernikov.

One of the most incredible thing on this disc is the second movement in which Ms. Argerich is absolutely unique! The atmosphere Argerich creates here and the sound she produces is so astounding that I was simply transfixed!

While the concerto shows us her great brilliance, another gem on this CD is a captivating performance of the Shostakovich Piano Quintet in G-minor, Op.57. Argerich’s technique is simply astounding, aided by a live recorded sound that is quite sharp and crisp. All the artists in the quintet are top-notch as well, with particular mention going to long-time collaborator, cellist Mischa Maisky.

This CD is yet another strong accomplishment in the astounding career of the amazing Martha Argerich. I listened to her doing this music again today…
