ROBERT SCHUMANN: Lieder ohne Worte

  • Martin Stegner, viola, and Tomoko Takahashi, piano

Mr.  Stenger is a member of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and he’s adapted the beautiful Lieder of Robert Schumann into music for viola and piano. He titled the album “Songs without Words”

• Dichterliebe, Op. 48 (arr. for viola and piano) (Tracks 1-16)

• Liederkreis, Op. 39 (arr. for viola and piano): (Tracks 17-28)

This Audio CD was issued October 12, 2010

These songs are the creation of a genius, Robert Schumann. This music has been enjoyed by millions of music lovers ever since they were composed in the 1800’s. Now we have a version of them for one of my favorite instruments, the viola. While the CD is delightful, the loss of the poet’s words, which gave rise to the music in the first place, must be accepted by the listener.

Mr. Stenger has also been enthusiastic about Jazz since his early days. Here is a video of his group, called BOLERO BERLIN, performing the Libertango by Astor Piazzolla:
