As a trumpet player, once you master the concerti of Haydn and Hummel, the challenge is to locate additional music that one can perform.
Allison Balsom decided to transcribe some old music, originally composed for Oboe or violin, so she can perform this music with her trumpet as the solo instrument. While purists might object, she achieved interesting results…
If you like the sound of a trumpet, then this music is for you! The modern trumpet adds a beautiful warm tone to these pieces, especially in Ms. Balsom’s playing style. I love all the original Italian Concertos with the original instrumentation but when these concerti are transcribed for trumpet it’s like all new music.
Balsom and the Scottish Ensemble, which she also directs, do a fine job of performing these pieces. The opening A – minor Vivaldi is crisply and stylishly played with Balsom’s graceful phrasing. You’ll enjoy the Cimarosa, and Balsom’s clear, focused tone gives the Albinoni a new feeling.
