Barber’s Concerto

Samuel Barber violin concerto

In addition to the wonderful Barber concerto, there is actually a second concerto on this CD: Composed by Edgar Meyer, one of our top Bass players, too.

Here are the tracks on this CD:

  • 1. Violin Concerto, Op. 14: Allegro
  • 2. Violin Concerto, Op. 14: Andante
  • 3. Violin Concerto, Op. 14: Presto in moto
  • 4. Violin concerto: Movement I
  • 5. Violin concerto: Movement II

Hilary Hahn is a model of what fine violinists have to be: Terrific interpreters; people with a sense of humor; musicians with the ability to withstand the rigors of modern day travel, and to meet the public after an exhausting performance. Ms. Hahn has been doing this since her early days as a young teenager, and her playing continues to amaze and impress me.

The lyrical aspects of the Barber concerto are wonderful, as are the technical challenges, especially in the third movement. Every major violinist of the past has had this concerto in her/his repertoire, and Ms. Hahn’s performance is second to none.

Here is Hilary’s performance of the 3rd movement of the Barber:

And here is an unusual combination: Giora Schmidt, violin, in the Barber Concerto for violin and orchestra, with Itzhak Perlman conducting the Israel Philharmonic orchestra.
