Schubert and Schumann

Schubert’s masterpieces, and Schumann’s Dichterliebe

Schubert:

  • An die Musik D547
  • Heidenröslein, D257
  • Die Forelle, D550
  • Nachthelle, D892 (Seidl)
  • Du bist die Ruh D776 (Rückert)
  • Ganymed, D544 (Goethe)
  • Litanei auf das Fest Allerseelen, D343
  • Der Hirt auf dem Felsen, D965 (Von Chezy / Muller)

With Andy Miles (clarinet)
Schumann:

  • Dichterliebe, Op. 48

Daniel Behle, tenor, and Sveinung Bjelland, piano

These Schubert and Schumann Lieder are world-renowned masterpieces. They are quite nicely done; however, in my view, they do not yet belong to the top level of historical interpretations

Mr. Behle has a beautiful voice; I am just expecting greater sensitivity in the interpretation. As an example: In Schubert’s “Forelle”, in the second section, where the poet speaks about the fisherman making the water dangerously murky, I do not hear in this interpretation the expected dark foreboding of the coming doom for the poor little fish…
