Sasha’s violin

Tchaikovsky: Complete works for violin and piano

  • Performed by Sasha Rozhdestvensky (violin), and Josiane Marfurt (piano)

In 1969 the well-known Russian musician Gennady Rozhdestvensky married the pianist Viktoria Postnikova; their son is the violinist Alexander, or Sasha, Rozhdestvensky. He has appeared in Britain at the Proms concerts, the Barbican and the Festival Hall in London and has made well-regarded CDs usually in Russian repertoire. Here he plays for us a collection of the violin and piano works by Tchaikovsky

Mr. Rozhdestvensky is clearly a musician with excellent training. I admire his bow arm and his fine technique. We may well hear much more from him once he emerges with more concerts in the US.

Tracks on this CD are:

1. Serenade melancolique, Op. 26 (version for violin and piano)

2. Valse-scherzo, Op. 34 (version for violin and piano)

3. Souvenir d’un lieu cher, Op. 42: No. 1. Meditation

4. Souvenir d’un lieu cher, Op. 42: No. 2. Scherzo

5. Souvenir d’un lieu cher, Op. 42: No. 3. Melodie

6. 2 Morceaux, Op. 10: No. 2. Humoresque (version for violin and piano)

7. String Quartet No. 3 in E flat minor, Op. 30: III. Andante funebre e doloroso ma con moto (version for violin and piano)

8. Six Romances, Op. 16 (version for violin and piano): Oh! Chante Encore!, Op. 16, No. 4 (version for violin and piano)

Here are Alexander and Gennady Rozhdestvensky in music by Schnittke

And here are Vanessa Wagner & Sasha Rozhdestvensky performing Beethoven’s violin sonata #5, known as the “Spring”sonata (Sorry about the clearly amateur video quality)
