With you… alone

Bei dir allein! (With you, alone)

  • Schubert Songs

For as long as I can remember, I have loved the music of Franz Schubert. I have also felt so sorry for this man who was lonely most of his life, and who died at age 31. It is amazing how a man who is ill and so unhappy could turn out such a vast amount of music that has survived to our time: Nine symphonies, more than 600 lieder, chamber music, piano sonatas, Violin sonatas, and church music.

On this new CD, the Swedish soprano Camilla Tilling performs songs by Franz Schubert, accompanied by Paul Rivinus, piano

The disc includes some of Schubert’s best-known songs, such as the carefree “An Silvia”, the serene “Litanei”, and the first “Suleika “song. And they are sung beautifully by Ms. Tilling

The program features great changes in emotion: from the portrayals of the joy and despair of young love in “Bei dir allein!” and “Lied des Florio”, to the Gothic drama of “Der Zwerg” and the despondency of “Totengräbers Heimweh”.

The selections are:

Schubert:

  • Bei dir allein, D866/2
  • Lied der Delphine, D857 No. 1
  • Lied des Florio, D857 No. 2
  • Suleika I, D720
  • Suleika II, D717
  • An Sylvia, D891
  • Der Zwerg, D771 (Collin)
  • Geheimes, D719 (Goethe)
  • Heimliches Lieben D922 (Klenke)
  • Gretchen am Spinnrade, D118
  • Frühlingsglaube, D686
  • Im Frühling, D882
  • Der Sänger am Felsen, D482
  • Totengräbers Heimwehe D842 (Craigher)
  • Litanei auf das Fest Allerseelen, D343

Performed by Camilla Tilling (soprano) & Paul Rivinius (piano)
As well as having a highly successful opera career, Camilla Tilling has made a name for herself in concert and in recital. Her previous recording, the Strauss recital “Rote Rosen” was met with great critical acclaim.

Here is a wonderful performance of Richard Strauss’ “Morgen”, op. 27, 4 /Tomorrow /

Camilla Tilling, soprano
Paul Rivinius, piano
Ulf Wallin, violin

And here is the German text of the Strauss song, as well as the translation into English:

“Und morgen wird die Sonne wieder scheinen
Und auf dem Wege, den ich gehen werde,
Wird uns, die Glücklichen, sie wieder einen,
Inmitten dieser sonnenathmenden Erde…

Und zu dem Strand, dem weiten, wogenblauen,
Werden wir still und langsam niedersteigen,
Stumm werden wir uns in die Augen schauen,
Und auf uns sinkt des Glückes stummes Schweigen…

And tomorrow the sun will shine again
And on the path that I shall take
It will re-unite us, the blessed ones,
In the midst of this world that breathes in the sun…

And to the broad shore, lapped by blue waves,
We shall quietly and slowly climb down,
Silently we shall look into each other’s eyes
While upon us descends the silence of true bliss…
