Marwood’s violin

The Romantic Violin Concerto

  • Music of  Robert Schumann

This CD brings the listener all of the works for violin and orchestra by Robert Schumann. Although the composer’s concertos for piano and cello are among of the most beloved works in classical music, none of these works for violin has enjoyed the same success. That result will be surprising to the listener after hearing them played here by violinist Anthony Marwood in performances filled with sensitivity and brilliance. Included are the Violin Concerto in D minor, the Phantasie and the Violin Concerto in A minor (an arrangement of the cello concerto).

The selections are as follows:

Schumann:

  • Violin Concerto in D minor, WoO 23
  • Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 129 (arranged from the Cello Concerto)
  • Fantasie in C major for Violin and Orchestra, Op.131

Performed by Anthony Marwood (violin), with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Douglas Boyd

Schumann’s Violin Concerto in D minor had to wait till 1937 for its premiere and it has never become a standard work; but in the hands of Anthony Marwood it sounds remarkable. The “Phantasie”, by contrast, was applauded at its premiere, and it performed a number of times by violinist Joseph Joachim.

The Violin Concerto in A minor was arranged by Schumann from his Cello Concerto of the same opus number and is an important work in its own right.

Anthony Marwood’s great technique and thoughtful musicianship have made him increasingly an artist to notice, and he performs frequently in Australia and the US, as well as throughout Europe.
