Mozart’s Magic

Magical Mozart!

This morning I listened to a section of Mozart’s opera Cosi fan Tutte (That’s how they all do it) by Mozart. In the process, I paid close attention to the soprano who was singing, Edita Gruberova. She was born in Bratislava, Slovakia, and I found her singing to be wonderful and magical.

I used to think that one needed to have some sort of ‘Austrian DNA’ to express Mozart’s music properly. But I have learned that the genius of Mozart has no boundaries. His genius is capable of speaking to folks who are European, Asian, whatever. One just needs to listen carefully and appreciate.

Cosi fan Tutte is an opera about Love, Trust, Deceit, and Regret. And the opera contains some amazing arias in which Mozart expresses these emotions. The top image on this page is the announcement of the first performance of the opera in 1790!

Here is the aria I heard this morning, as sung by Edita Gruberova:

  • Cosi fan tutte – Per pietà, ben mio, perdona

  • And here’s another video: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Così fan tutte –

With the following performers:

  • Edita Gruberova, Delores Ziegler, Teresa Stratas, Luis Lima, Ferruccio Furlanetto, Paolo Montarsolo. And the Wiener Philharmoniker, conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt
