Charles Neidich, Clarinet

Mozart clarinet music

Outstanding older recordings have an important place in any collector’s shelf. This CD contains the famous Quintet for clarinet and strings by Mozart. And… it also contains a recording of–

The Quartet for Clarinet and strings, which appears to be an adaptation of one of Mozart’s violin/piano sonatas for this instrumentation, featuring the clarinet as the solo instrument.

The final selection is the so-called “Kegelstatt Trio” for piano, clarinet and viola in E-Flat.

All of this music is made to order for one fine clarinetist, and Charles Neidich is excellent in all these roles.

The tracks are as follows:

1. Quintet for Clarinet, 2 Violins, Viola and Violoncello in A Major, K. 581 “Stadler Quintet”/I. Allegro (Instrumental)

2. Quintet for Clarinet, 2 Violins, Viola and Violoncello in A Major, K. 581 “Stadler Quintet”/II. Larghetto (Instrumental)

3. Quintet for Clarinet, 2 Violins, Viola and Violoncello in A Major, K. 581 “Stadler Quintet”/III. Menuetto – Trio I – Trio II (Instrumental)

4. Quintet for Clarinet, 2 Violins, Viola and Violoncello in A Major, K. 581 “Stadler Quintet”/IV. Allegretto con Variazioni (Instrumental)

5. Quartet for Clarinet and Strings/I. Allegro moderato (Anon. period transcription)

6. Quartet for Clarinet and Strings/II. Andante sostenuto, cantabile (Anon. period transcription)

7. Quartet for Clarinet and Strings/III. Rondo. Allegro – Allegro vivace – Tempo primo (Anon. period transcription)

8. Trio for Piano, Clarinet and Viola in E-flat Major, K.498 “Kegelstatt-Trio”/I. Andante (Instrumental)

9. Trio for Piano, Clarinet and Viola in E-flat Major, K.498 “Kegelstatt-Trio”/II. Menuetto – Trio (Instrumental)

10. Trio for Piano, Clarinet and Viola in E-flat Major, K.498 “Kegelstatt-Trio”/III. Rondeaux. Allegretto (Instrumental)

This is a beautiful chamber music recording. The playing is absolutely superb! The phrasing is sensitive, and the intonation is perfect.
