Tchaikovsky’s Fifth.

Yuri Temirkanov Conducts.

As some of you know, I joined my very first symphony orchestra when I was 14 years old. My family had just immigrated to the US, and we lived in Brooklyn, NY.

I remember all the pieces that I learned as a member of the second violin section; it was so exciting for me. And the Symphony #5 by Tchaikovsky has remained as one of my great favorites.

Now this new recording on DVD has come out. And this same symphony is performed by a master interpreter of Russian music:

Tchaikovsky:

  • Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64

Performed by the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Yuri Temirkanov.

There were actually three amazing concerts dedicated to Tchaikovsky, which were recorded at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris with Yuri Temirkanov conducting the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. This is one of the performances.

Here is Yuri Temirkanov conducting the Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 5:

And here is a section of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony number 6 “Pathétique”:
