Haitink’s Birthday.

Bernard Haitink’s 85th Birthday

Next week, Bernard Haitink conducts the New York Philharmonic for a two-week residency in celebration of his eighty-fifth birthday.

The first of two programs gives us selections from the so – called ‘Second Viennese School’, with Anton Webern’s “Im Sommerwind” and Alban Berg’s rhapsodic Violin Concerto (with Leonidas Kavakos).

Also on this same program is a composition from an older Vienna of the 1800’s, offering us Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, “Eroica”.

Dates for these concerts:

  • May 8th at 7:30 PM and May 9-10 at 8 PM

Venue:

  • Avery Fisher Hall, New York City, 212-875-5656

Here is Bernard Haitink in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 “Eroica”, with the Berliner Philharmoniker: (Watch the small yet hugely effective gestures by the conductor)

And next, here is a work by Anton Webern: 1. Kantate op. 29 | Lucerne Festival 2013. (However, not conducted by Mr. Haitink):
