Strauss’ “Salome”.

Richard Strauss:

Richard Strauss’ Opera “Salome” was the composer’s first exploration of a new environment, which created a strong force of its musical expression. The music was a direct response to Oscar Wilde’s play, and Strauss aligned the music to the text with great precision for its mood, drama and psychological content.

The lush orchestration of this music elaborates the relationship between Salome and the prophet Jochanaan.

The singers in this performance include: Erika Sunnegårdh (Salome), Mark S. Doss (Jochanaan), Robert Brubaker (Herodes) and Dalia Schaechter (Herodias)

Performed by the Orchestra of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Nicola Luisotti (conductor)

In this production, the linking of Salome’s sexual obsession and cruelty as portrayed by Erika Sunnegårdh is also subtly reflected in the scenic representation.

The orchestra is under the musical direction of internationally acclaimed conductor Nicola Luisotti.
