Hewitt Plays Messiaen.

Angela Hewitt plays:

  • Music by Olivier Messiaen.

This new recording of Olivier Messiaen’s “Turangalila-Symphonie” features the Finnish Radio Symphony led by Hannu Lintu, along with renowned soloists Angela Hewitt, piano, as well as Valérie Hartmann-Claverie, who plays the rare electro-acoustic Ondes Martenot.

Within this vast work, Messiaen provides continuity and cohesion with recurrent musical images and reference points, as well as idées fixes or cyclic themes of the great Romantic composers.

Here are a few samples of music by Messiaen:

First, here is Katarzyna Musial playing Olivier Messiaen’s Prelude No.1 – ‘La colombe’ (The Dove):

And next, here is a historic video: Messiaen’s Theme and Variations, performed by David Oistrakh (violin), and Frida Bauer(piano):

Finally, here is ‘Le Merle Noir’ (The Blackbird) by Olivier Messiaen, as performed by Courtney Wise (flute) and Miles Graber (piano):
