Schumann’s Magic.

Schumann:

  • Complete Symphonic Works Vol. II

This CD represents the second volume of the complete recording of Robert Schumann‘s orchestral works. The series includes all the symphonies (with both versions of the Fourth) as well as all the overtures and concertos.

On this CD, we hear:

Schumann:

  • Symphony No. 2 in C major, Op. 61
  • Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, Op. 97 ‘Rhenish’

Performed by the WDR Symphony Orchestra,  Heinz Holliger conducting.

The Second and Third Symphonies, according to the usual numbering, passed through contrasting histories:

The ‘Rhenish’ remained a relatively popular symphony; but the C major Symphony was originally received by contemporaries as a trend-setting work, yet it receded into the background from the late nineteenth century onwards.

Heinz Holliger and the WDR Symphony Orchestra have recorded these works with an orchestra of the same size that was available to Schumann. In so doing, they not only uncover the sonic ideal of the composer, but also its consistent and convincing message.

Holliger‘s performances draw on a lifetime study of Schumann‘s music, thought, and personality. His approach imparts lightness and lucidity to these scores through a balance of parts, delicately gradated dynamics and invigorating tempos.

Here is a brief rehearsal of the Finale from Schumann’s Symphony #3, with The Chamber Orchestra of Europe in rehearsal with Heinz Holliger. Trombones: Karl Frisendahl (alto), Mike Lloyd (tenor):

And next, here is Schumann: Symphony No. 2 in C major, with Daniel Harding conducting Mahler Chamber Orchestra: (skip the ad)

Listen carefully to the great sadness at 22:23 and toward 24:00.
