Michelangeli.

Ravel and Rachmaninov:

  • Piano Concertos.

On this CD, the late pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli brings his technical mastery to two works composed within a few years of each other: Ravel’s exquisite, jazz-inflected G major concerto and Rachmaninov’s 4th concerto, more discreetly Romantic than its two much-loved predecessors.

We get to hear the following:

Rachmaninov:

  • Piano Concerto No. 4 in G minor, Op. 40

Ravel:

Performed byArturo Benedetti Michelangeli (piano), with the Philharmonia Orchestra, Ettore Gracis conducting.

With his infinitely subtle gradations of color and touch, Michelangeli proves to be characteristically amazing in both of these works.
Let me illustrate this pianist’s outstanding skills:

Here is Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli – Ravel Piano Concerto, as conducted by Sergiu Celibidache:

And next, here he is in Brahms’s Ballade Op.10 No 2 in D major:
