Gershwin:

Ravel:

Performed by Helene Grimaud (piano), with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, David Zinman conducting.

I recall the time when I first heard the Ravel concerto. I was visiting New York City, and I was at Carnegie Hall for a tour; during that tour a concert was taking place (or a rehearsal), and I found my way in to listen. The pianist at that time was Martha Argerich, and I was transfixed by the great beauty of the second movement of the Ravel composition.

Hélène Grimaud, the artist on this CD was born in 1969, and she is a well-known French pianist. She studied at the Conservatoire de Paris, where she won first prize in 1985.

Her professional career began in 1987, when she performed with the Orchestre de Paris under the baton of Daniel Barenboim. She has been praised for her willingness to take risks in her reinterpretation of works. This release features piano concertos by Maurice Ravel and George Gershwin.
