Verdi’s Perseverance

Verdi:

  • La Traviata

Giuseppe Verdi had achieved huge successes with his two operas Rigoletto and Trovatore. While La Traviata was for a while a struggle for him, he had the confidence and the right libretto to persevere, and to make it a success.

Even if the opera had to be reworked later, Verdi never lost confidence and finally found the right cast to pull it all off, and to make it successful.

On this older CD, we have a cast of amazing singers: Angela Gheorghiu (Violetta), Frank Lopardo (Alfredo), Leo Nucci (Giorgio Germont), Leah-Marian Jones (Flora), Gillian Knight (Annina), Robin Leggate (Gastone), Mark Beesley (Dottore Grenvil), Richard Van Allan (Baron Douphol), Roderick Earle (Marchese d’Obigny) With the support of the Orchestra and Chorus of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, conducted by Sir Georg Solti.

Angela Gheorghiu is in the spotlight in this role. Her singing and acting are so impressive! And Sir Georg Solti shows us why he built a career not only as an orchestral conductor, but also as a legendary leader of opera performances.
