Bernstein Rehearses Elgar

Edward Elgar is by far my favorite British composer. I find his music to multi faceted. At times I admire his humor, and at other times I am blown away by his ability to express tragic feelings and sadness.

Last night, I listened to an entire rehearsal of Elgar’s Enigma Variations, as conducted and coached by Leonard Bernstein.

In this music, the composer tells us musically about several of his friends and acquaintances. These include his wife, and also several others. Each person is captured in one of the Variations.

The performance I heard on DVD yesterday included the rehearsal, as directed by  Leonard Bernstein I enjoyed it a lot…
