Pianist’s Birthday.

Nelson Freire’s Birthday.

  • Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5, and Piano Sonata No. 32.

Released to celebrate his 70th birthday, Nelson Freire presents this new album: a brand new recording of the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5, universally known as the “Emperor.”

This is another collaboration between the great Brazilian pianist and Italian maestro Riccardo Chailly, leading the Gewandhausorchester.

The concerto is paired alongside Beethoven’s C minor Piano Sonata no. 32, the composer’s last piano sonata, Op. 111.

The CD tracks are as follows:

Beethoven:

  • Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major, Op. 73 ‘Emperor’, with Gewandhausorchester, Riccardo Chailly conducting.
  • Piano Sonata No. 32 in C minor, Op. 111

Performed by Nelson Freire (piano)

Born in October 1944 in a small town in the interior of Brazil, Nelson Freire made his first public appearance at age five with Mozart’s Sonata in A major, K. 331. His family, impressed by their son’s precocious talent, moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he continued his studies under the guidance of two excellent teachers, Nise Obino and Lucia Branco.
