La Traviata

Verdi:

  • La Traviata

This is one terrific performance of Verdi’s La Traviata. The reason is because this production combines the world’s best singers, and one of the all time great orchestras.

The singers are:

Anna Netrebko (Violetta), Rolando Villazón (Alfredo), Thomas Hampson (Germont), Helene Schneiderman (Flora), Diane Pilcher (Annina), Salvatore Cordella (Gastone), Paul Gay (Barone), Herman Wallén (Marchese), Luigi Roni (Grenvil)

Supported by the Wiener Philharmoniker, Wiener Staatsopernchor, Carlo Rizzi (conductor), and Brian Large (director)

Anna Netrebko is an amazing singer who combines voice, looks, and acting to project the character she portrays. Netrebko’s voice emerges very naturally. She sings as if she were speaking.

Subtitles on this DVD are in: Italian, English, German, French, Spanish, Chinese

Here is what the Penguin Guide, 2010 edition, had to say:

“This is an astonishingly successful modern production…Throughout the opera Netrebko sings gloriously…[Villazon] makes a perfect partner for her as Alfredo, their acting as well as their singing consistently real and spontaneous. Thomas Hampson, too, is a quite unforgettable Germont pere…In short, this is a production full of imagination.”
