I love the music of Rachmaninov, and Nikolai Lugansky is offering his interpretation of the two piano sonatas of the composer on this CD. Both piano sonatas are monuments of the piano repertoire, with technical challenges and opportunities to display the artist’s musical capabilities.

These sonatas were composed 5 years apart, and they present a multitude of emotions and contrasts. Few recordings exist of the first sonata, which Rachmaninov intended to be a ‘program sonata’ based on the main characters of Goethe’s Faust.
