August DVD of the Month: Sokolov

The DVD of the Month for August 2016 is one of the great pianists of our time, Grigory Sokolov.

Acclaimed French film-maker Bruno Monsaingeon is well known for his documentaries about several pianists. In the director’s notes to this new Sokolov film, Monsaingeon writes:

“Sokolov himself believes that the concert represents the focal point of musical life and that everything else is artificial. As a result, he is not only reluctant to be recorded but also to be filmed…”

Here is this amazing musician, who plays first one of my all time favorites, the intermezzo Op. 117, number 2 by Brahms:
