Summer Festivals!

World-wide Music Festivals!!

Summer is approaching, and so are a whole host of classical music festivals all over the world. I have attended several of these over the years, and it is an opportunity to reconnect with well-known musicians, as well as to hear new young talent.

Here are just 7 of the many festivals:

Aspen, Colorado Music Festival

hile you can fly into the Aspen airport from Denver, I have always driven the scenic route through the Colorado mountains and canyons to get to Aspen by car. Yes… you get to altitudes of 11,000 feet on the way; but Aspen itself is at about 8900 feet, and it takes a few days to get adjusted to the altitude. Great music, great food; great people. Check it out here for more details; it’s a wonderful way to overdose on music at the Aspen Music Festival.

Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music

The Festival is in its 48th year, and it is under the direction of conductor Marin Alsop, who is now also the Music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. The mission of the festival has been to champion contemporary music, and much of the music that was “new” many years ago has become established, accepted and loved by listeners. Tanglewood Music Festival

This is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Bernstein studied here under Koussevitzky. Ozawa was here for many years as well, when he began as one of Bernstein’s students… I visited here back in 1953, and I still remember the place in the Massachusetts Berkshire mountains…

Cambridge Music Festival

This seems like an exciting place in Britain; I’ve not attended yet…

Verbier Festival

The festival is becoming more well – known every year; It is located in Switzerland, in a gorgeous area of Nature… but I have yet to get there… I would love to visit this festival, particularly if someone would take me there in a private jet. Click here for details

City of London Festival

Each summer the City of London Festival brings the City’s unique buildings and outdoor spaces to life with a program of music, visual arts, film, walks and talks, much of it free. From 21 June to 9 July, the 2010 City of London Festival celebrates music and culture from the Portuguese-speaking world, presents the next generation of classical music stars. Carmel, California Bach Festival

I have attended concerts at the Carmel Bach Festival for many years. 2010 is the last year for conductor Bruno Weill, who has led this festival for many seasons. There are wonderful venues for orchestral works, chamber music, major choral works, and solo recitals. And the setting is the California coast, and a charming town by the name of Carmel by the Sea. Yes.. Clint Eastwood was the Mayor of the town for several years and he still lives in the area and own businesses there. Check it out here
