Listen to Lupu!

Radu Lupu’s Magic!

I have admired Radu Lupu’s playing for many years. In particular, I felt that his performances of Schubert’s music were astounding and spellbinding. Then I learned that his performances of Schumann were also truly moving.

What’s next? Yep… you guessed it: Now we have Lupu playing Mozart, and I find myself just sitting there as though in a trance: See if you don’t agree: Heavenly music that in the hands of Radu Lupu with the masterful playing of the Vienna Philharmonic is truly second to none.

Why do I enjoy his playing so much? There are many reasons: Listen to the dramatic silences between the notes. Observe how direct and sensitive his playing is. No great body movements or physical expressions; rather, the composer is king… We hear Radu Lupu’s view of what the composer was sharing with us. For me, this is often sublime!

Here is the Mozart Piano Concerto Number 23 – 2nd movement, with Sándor Végh, conducting, and Radu Lupu, piano, with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra:

And here’s the 3rd movement of the same concerto:
