Beethoven Trios

Beethoven: Complete Piano Trios Volume 1

Piano trios are a terrific form of very intimate chamber music. Just imagine the times when neither television, iPods, cable, or movies were around. People entertained themselves by playing chamber music, and composers earned their livelihood by composing new music.

The beauty of this music is its intimacy. None of the instruments can hide: what one voice plays is clearly heard by the other players and by the audience. As such, the composer’s ability to create interesting, creative harmonies and melodic lines is so exciting.

On this CD, we hear Beethoven’s contributions to this musical form:

Beethoven:

  • Piano Trio No. 2 in G major, Op. 1 No. 2
  • Piano Trio No. 9 in B flat major, WoO 39
  • Piano Trio No. 10 in E flat major, Op. 44 ‘Variations on an Original Theme’
  • Piano Trio No. 5 in D major, Op. 70 No. 1 ‘The Ghost’

The music is performed by the Gould Piano Trio

The members are:

• Lucy Gould, violin
• Alice Neary, Cello
• Benjamin Frith, Piano

This release is the first volume of a new series performed by the internationally renowned Gould Piano Trio. This dynamic ensemble celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and in these recordings, reveals many different facets of Beethoven’s complex character.

These performances were recorded live at St. George’s Bristol.

Here is the well – known cellist Alice Neary, who performed at Woodend Barn (UK) on Sunday 3rd July, 2011. Her performance included pieces by Bach and Britten
