Julia Fischer

Julia Fischer: Poème

For this recording, Julia Fischer is joined by the late conductor, Yakov Kreizberg, directing his own orchestra, the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra − with whom Julia Fischer had a very close artistic relationship.

This CD gives us four great violin compositions, including the following:

Chausson:

  • Poème for Violin & Orchestra, Op. 25

Respighi:

  • Poema autumnnale

Suk:

  • Fantasy for Violin & Orchestra, Op. 24

Vaughan Williams:

  • The Lark Ascending

Performed by Julia Fischer, violin, with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, conducted by Yakov Kreizberg

Here are some press comments:

The Telegraph, 28th April 2011, wrote:

“Four nationalities, four moods, but linked by a common late-Romantic, poetic sensibility. All are warmly performed by Fischer and the Monte-Carlo orchestra. The CD makes a fine memorial for conductor Yakov Kreizberg, who died at an early age last month.”

Classic FM Magazine, July 2011, wrote:

“probably the finest [Lark] on record…Fischer’s detailing of the avian solo line is so filled with little wonders and fresh insights that it is almost like discovering the music for the first time…Kreizberg and his Monte Carlo orchestra follow every fluctuation in Fischer’s free-flowing solo line so that the orchestra and the soloist really do appear as one…This exceptional recording is a fitting tribute to a great musical partnership.”

I just love both the Chausson and the Vaughan Williams on this CD, because of their soaring lyricism and their focus on the violinist as a rhapsodic performer of melody. Audiences have cherished them equally, and Fischer joins a line of recorded versions by many other artists. Her taste, phrasing, and innate musicality are excellent. Conductor Kreizberg’s death from cancer at the age of 51, adds a sad note to this CD, and a special poignancy to The Lark Ascending.
