Shostakovich Trio #2 in E-Minor

My 14 year-old Grandson called me just now, and he told me that he is taking part in learning and performing the Trio #2 in E-Minor by Dmitry Shostakovich. For me this was a WOW moment!

I do not know this piece, so I went on line in search for a recording that I liked. This trio opens with a Cello solo (another Wow moment for me), and this solo opens with very high harmonics which are quite challenging to play properly…

Later in the first movement, the harmonics give way to a typical Shostakovich melody, which is alternately sad and later joyful.

I selected a recording with pianist Martha Argerich, amazing Cellist Mischa Maisky, and violinist Gidon Kremer.

Enjoy!
