Helene Grimaud Plays the Bach/Busoni Chaconne

Johann Sebastian Bach composed the Chaconne as a section of one of his solo violin sonatas. It is a beautiful work, and it is full of great challenges to be performed by a violin alone with no accompaniment.

Fast forward to the 1800, and to a musician whose name is Ferruccio Busoni.

Busoni worked on his piano transcription of the Chaconne while living in Boston between 1891 and 1892. He dedicated it to fellow pianist and composer Eugen d’Albert, who, unfortunately, found the work excessive and never performed it.
