On First Listening to the Vienna Philharmonic

For many of us, memorable events tend to remain in our memory for a long time. Such was the case in 1950 when my father went with me to my first concert by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Our family was on vacation in Vienna, and more than 70 years later I still have vivid memories of this event.

It was a Sunday morning, and the orchestra played its subscription concerts at 11:00 AM. It was more than 70 years ago, and I only recall part of the concert program: The orchestra performed the amazing “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Modest Mussorgsky, as orchestrated by Maurice Ravel.

The concert was sold out that day; but luckily my father obtained two single tickets, and we sat at different locations in the main hall. Not only was this my very first orchestral concert, but the eyes had a feast as well, sitting at the Large Hall of the Friends of Music in Vienna! (See photo).

I could write a lot more about this amazing music, but instead, I’ll just offer you and opportunity to hear it on your own.

Enjoy!
